Mississauga name came from the word Misi-zaagiing (native language). Two major native speaking groups Iroquoian and Algonquian were living in the Credit River Valley area when Europeans in the 1600s arrived.
Natives were driven away by 1700 from the area. Mississauga is a combination of different villages such as Lakeview, Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixi Lorne Park, Port Credit, Sheridan Summerville and Erindale.
In August 1805 City of Toronto (York at that time) bought a big land portion 84,000 acres from Mississauga. Presently it covers 288.42 KM2 and it has Oakville, Milton to the west, Brampton to the north, Lake Ontario to the south and Toronto to the east.
It has approximately 781,057 residents.
